The origin stories of creative collaboration partnerships are most commonly fueled by love. A shared love and passion for each other's work can easily plant the seed of thought about working together. Brought together by fate, at some point the creation of a common goal gives birth to a vision, a mission, and the start of the journey to pursue it.

For Icelandic-Faroese duo Kiasmos, it was Ólafur Arnalds’ time spent touring as sound engineer for Janus Rasmussen’s band Bloodgroup that saw the pair first decide to join forces. Having mixed for Janus many times in a club environment, Ólafur was a natural choice to take on tour, where their shared love of a particular techno sound soon became apparent. Their common goal as described by Ólafur, was a motto of ‘creating techno music for people who are tired of dancing only with their feet’. Joining the revolt against the boring, serious, soulless world of self-centered techno, more concerned with looking cool than having a good time, this is music to make you move. There really is no substitute for ‘hands in the air’.

These days however you don’t even need to be in the same room to collaborate, thanks to the modern wonders of technology. Tools like ConnectionOpen are pushing the boundaries of how musicians and artists can work together creatively over the internet.

For this week’s DRC Sound Design tutorial, we’re looking at the track ‘Bent’ from Kiasmos’ 2014 self titled debut album. Don’t forget to like and subscribe and let us know in the comments what you would like to see next!
